Thousands turn out for National Hunger Strike Commemoration

Almost 7,000 people gathered in Ballina last weekend to take part in the National Hunger Strike Commemoration which took place in Mayo for the first time. Thousands travelled from all over the country to mark the 36th anniversary of the H-Block hunger strikes as well as honour the Mayo men who died on hunger strike including Ballycroy native Jack McNeela, Hollymount’s Frank Stagg, and Ballina man Michael Gaughan.

Calls for pyrite remediation schemes for Mayo following publication of report

Two Mayo senators have called on the Government to bring in a remediation scheme for homes in north Mayo that have been affected by pyrite. Both Sinn Féin senator Rose Conway-Walsh and Fine Gael senator Michelle Mulherin called for such a scheme to be put in place this week after the Expert Panel on Concrete Blocks published their report.

The future of GMIT's Castlebar campus has taken another twist this week as concerns for the future of the campus intensified. Fine Gael senator Michelle Mulherin said that she had been informed that a number of staff and students at the Castlebar campus had been asked to move to the Galway campus, saying: “I am very concerned that between 12 and 15 staff, at GMIT Castlebar have been asked via their union to transfer voluntarily to Galway within three to four weeks. Should they refuse, they will be added to the redeployment panel, and may be asked to transfer to any location within the higher education sector.

An operation to recover the three missing crew members of the Rescue 116 helicopter, which crashed into the sea off Blacksod in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was continuing yesterday afternoon, as this paper went to print. Captain Dara Fitzpatrick (45), who was recovered in a critical condition on Tuesday morning after the crash, passed away in hospital later on Tuesday. Ms Fitzpatrick, a mother of a three-year-old son, was spotted in the sea by the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter at daybreak on Tuesday and was picked up by the Achill based lifeboat and brought ashore.
